Graduation Requirements

What are PBATs?

PBAT stands for Performance-Based Assessment Tasks. Instead of relying solely on standardized tests, students at our International School complete PBATs to demonstrate competency of academic content and critical thinking skills. These are in-depth projects that allow students to show what they’ve learned in a meaningful, real-world way.

How do PBATs work?

Throughout high school, students complete PBATs (Performance-Based Assessment Tasks) in the four core subject areas—English, Math, Science, and Social Studies—as well as in Native Language Arts, and submit a personal statement. Each PBAT involves research, writing, and a formal presentation or defense before a panel of teachers. These tasks are aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and are developed with ongoing guidance and feedback from teachers.

Why PBATs?

PBATs are a key part of The Internationals Approach, which values deeper learning, language development, and student voice. For our multilingual learners, PBATs offer a more equitable and supportive path to graduation by focusing on growth, understanding, and communication over test-taking.

Graduation Through PBATs

At Queens International Secondary School, students graduate by completing both Regents exams and portfolio-based assessments. As part of the Internationals Network for Public Schools, our students take Regents exams and demonstrate their learning in other core subjects through PBATs (Performance-Based Assessment Tasks). These projects involve research, data analysis, writing, and a formal presentation to a panel of teachers and peers—helping students build skills for college and beyond.

How can families support their child?

Encourage your child to take ownership of their learning, stay on top of deadlines, and practice presenting their ideas clearly. Ask about their PBAT projects and the topics they’re exploring—it’s a great way to stay connected and celebrate their progress.Have more questions? Reach out to your child’s advisor or a teacher—we’re here to support you every step of the way!
